Spring Season Training Tips for Cyclists
So, the snow has melted and the flowers are about to bloom, It’s the spring cycling season. You’re beginning to think more precisely about that race you’ve had your eye on over the winter and how you can best jump into gear and hit the grown rolling. How can you use the training that you learned over the winter season and translate that into the spring? Below are 5 tips that will help catapult your training regime and push you forward to something new.
Tip 1: Ease into Training
Don’t create a false reality. Try not to add too much volume to your workouts. Just because it’s sunny and 70 degrees doesn’t mean you have to go so hard on the bike. Gradually build into your training. Try and air on the side of less to avoid injury. It’s about longevity. The last thing you want to do is compromise your fitness and training regimen before your first race.
Tip 2: Balance Your Training
Structure your training. Refer to the Velo HIIT 7- day Training plan (Given to Velo HIIT riders). Have a skeleton for the week on what you can manage to create balance. 1 hard ride, 1 short ride, 1 climbing session, active recovery, and endurance. Keep a journal and log your training. Keep in mind that it’s also ok to modify your training. For instance, if your stressed with work and trying to find that work-life balance and cannot get a ride in. Don’t stress it. The last thing you want to do is train when you’re stressed. Take a step back and modify that day by going for a walk, run, or stretch indoor. If you have an indoor training bike ride that for 20 to 30 minutes to supplement.
Tip 3: Trust The Process
Try not to focus too much on outcomes and focus more on the journey over time. Not every workout is going to be your best. Fall in love with the adventure side of cycling, and the nutrition that you feed your body for fuel. Don’t try to compare yourself to others because that will push out the joy of cycling and you doing your best. Become process-driven.
Tip 4: The Time is Now
Ride yourself into shape. If you’ve taken the entire winter season off for whatever reason it may be, it doesn’t mean that your chance for competing is over. I encourage you to continue to sign up for your first race. Leading into that race you can condition your body by attending local group rides or by developing a platform for your training. Look at your calendar and create a training weekend. Find a road that you’ve never ridden before, and climb up a hill that you’ve never climbed before. Adapt an adventure mindset to your cycling.
Tip 5: Believing Is Everything
Lastly, you got to do the work. Live your future self in the now by getting out there and training. A lot of it is putting yourself in the right mindset and deciding to change who you are. It’s nothing familiar. Focus on what you can control and not the things that you can’t in the outside world. Only you know what your purpose is and you know that it’s important to have a clear vision and focus on it.
